Vegetables That Trigger Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a painful inflammatory condition of the large intestine. It results in cramps, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea. If you have UC, then you will have to plan your everyday meals carefully. Few foods can trigger the symptoms of UC and make it worse. Here is a list of vegetables to avoid with ulcerative colitis.
Broccoli
Broccoli is a moderately fibrous vegetable. However, it is quite difficult for the gut to digest. This is why broccoli falls in the list of vegetables to avoid with ulcerative colitis. It takes the gut a lot of time to digest broccoli, which can aggravate symptoms of UC, including cramping and diarrhea.
Corn
Corn is a high-fibrous vegetable and is usually considered unsafe for those with UC. Though corn is boiled before consumption, the corn kernels go as a whole through the gut and can cause inflammation in the gut, including GI irritation and diarrhea.
Mushrooms
Like corn, mushrooms are also some of the vegetables to avoid with ulcerative colitis, as they are hard to digest. They stay in the gut for a while, increasing the chance of inflammation.
Raw onions
Onions that are cooked are considered relatively safer for those with UC when compared to raw onions. Raw onions are rich in fiber and also contain considerable amounts of sugar. Sugar can lead to gas, which can complicate the symptoms of UC. Make sure your onions are fully cooked before you enjoy them.
Carrots
Though carrots are healthy vegetables for the body, they are considered problematic for people with UC because they are rich in fiber. 100 grams of carrots leave you higher by 2.8 grams of fiber. The high fiber content makes it difficult for the gut to digest this vegetable.
Artichokes
Artichokes are veggies with high fiber content, and they make to the list of vegetables to avoid with ulcerative colitis. One large artichoke has about 10 grams of fiber. Poorly cooked artichokes will trigger flare-ups of UC.
Celery
Though 95% of celery is made up of water, it has a substantial amount of soluble and insoluble fiber that makes it a troublesome vegetable choice when you have ulcerative colitis. One cup of celery sticks will leave you higher by five grams of fiber and this will trigger symptoms of diarrhea.
All uncooked and unpeeled vegetables
Any vegetable that is unpeeled and uncooked is a trigger for developing the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. It is difficult for the gut to digest raw vegetables and vegetables with peels.
Make a note of all these vegetables to avoid with ulcerative colitis and stay away from them as much as you can. If you want to eat these veggies, make sure they are thoroughly steamed, baked, or cooked. This will make it easier to digest them.
